EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r the monthly interest rate (yearly rate ÷ 12) and n the number of months. In early years most of each payment is interest; over time more goes to principal.
Paying extra each month reduces the outstanding principal faster, so you pay less interest and finish earlier. The calculator shows the time and interest saved compared with paying only the regular payment.
Borrowing 200,000 at 6.5% for 20 years means a monthly payment of about 1,491 and total interest of about 157,875.
