Asset allocation: how to split your money by risk profile

Why does asset allocation matter more than picking stocks?
Asset allocation is how you divide money between asset classes such as equity, debt and gold. Studies of long-term portfolio returns keep finding that this split explains more of the outcome than which individual stock or fund you chose.
The reason is simple: different assets behave differently in the same conditions. When one falls, another may hold up or rise, which makes the whole portfolio steadier.
